Choosing a Rochester area nursing home for a loved one

It is never an easy decision. And once the decision to place a loved one in a nursing home has been made, it can be difficult to find a facility that suits the situation.

Fortunately, the federal government has put together a useful guide on how people can choose a nursing home that is a good fit.

A good place to start is right near your own home. Ask friends and neighbors if they have had experience with nursing homes in the area. If they recommend a particular facility, that home is a good one to put on your list of possible landing spots.

You can also ask doctors and other health care providers for their recommendations.

Once you have that list of landing spots, you can schedule visits to take a look at the facilities yourself; if your loved one is able to go along, so much the better.

Also be sure to check Medicare’s website for nursing home comparisons. Also ask New York’s health department for any other information about the facility.

Questions to pose while you’re visiting the home:

  • Are pets allowed?
  • What kinds of living space decorations are allowed or forbidden?
  • What kinds of planned activities are available?
  • Can residents choose at which times they bathe, get up, go to sleep?

There are many other important questions to ask of the management and staff at the facility, of course.

One way Rochester residents help ensure that their loved ones get the care they need is to speak with an attorney with Weinstein & Randisi. We can help choose a facility, help you with Medicaid planning, Veteran’s benefits and more.
