As a parent, you constantly think about protecting your kids. It’s one of the most important things you do on a daily basis, and it has probably been that way since the day your first child was born.
What you should know, then, is that making a will is just one more way to protect your kids. Don’t think of the will as just a legal document or something you have to do, but as a way that you can keep your kids safe and happy — even if you’re not actually around to do it.
First and foremost, your will gives you a chance to pick the people who will be your kids’ guardians if you die before they’re on their own. You know they’re going to grow up in a loving home where they are wanted and treated with respect.
On top of that, a will lets you create trusts and take other steps to make sure that your assets really go to your kids. The state will make the decision if you don’t, and much can be lost. The will passes what you own on properly so that your children are supported.
If you’d like, you can even use your will or a trust to give out the money for specific purposes. A common example is providing money to be used for college expenses. You can help plan for your children’s futures, even for things that are to give them everything you always wanted for them.
Don’t delay in drafting this important document. Be sure you know exactly what you need to do in New York from a legal perspective.
